Huge news! Toyota has unveiled its all-new RAV4, which builds on the legacy of its popular predecessors while introducing pioneering safety and multimedia technologies, a new-look exterior and interior design and advanced hybrid powertrain solutions.

The sixth-generation RAV4 will become the first Toyota offered in Australia with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, offering the choice of powerful 2WD or AWD arrangements and targeting up to 100km of electric-only driving range.

Toyota will also offer its first ever GR Sport version of the RAV4 with the powerful and efficient PHEV AWD powertrain providing a more dynamic expression of the RAV4’s handling characteristics and design cues.

The new RAV4 PHEV lineup and GR Sport will be complemented by an extensive hybrid 2WD and AWD range that delivers improved electric motor output and transaxle efficiency.

The new-generation RAV4 is designed to support the active and adventurous lifestyles of customers with improved interior amenity and greater driver engagement in a range of driving scenarios.

Toyota Australia Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations Sean Hanley said the all-new RAV4 would continue to resonate with customers like its forebears.

“When it first arrived in Australia in 1994, the RAV4 appealed to Australian customers with its family-friendly utility, bold design and signature Toyota dependability and has since attracted more than 500,000 sales,” Mr Hanley said.

“The all-new sixth-generation RAV4 will carry on the legacy created by its predecessors, while introducing exciting new Toyota-first technologies like plug-in hybrid powertrains and next-generation software.

“Since the 2001 launch of Toyotas first hybrid electric vehicle in Australia, we have led the development of hybrid technology that is refined, powerful and efficient, delivering customer confidence for quality, durability and reliability. With the launch of our first plug-in hybrid, we are taking that broad customer appeal in a diversified powertrain landscape to a whole new level.”

Underpinning the new plug-in hybrid system is a 2.5-litre petrol engine combined with a new 22.7kWh high-capacity lithium-ion battery that will provide a targeted electric only driving range of up to 100km(1) based on the WLTP cycle.

Electric driving range is maximised with the help of geofencing technology, combining real-time road and traffic data along with insights from the driver’s typical routes and driving style, to automatically switch between hybrid and electric modes.

The new battery supports DC fast charging with a 50kW onboard charger, which can replenish the battery from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 30 minutes, while a new 11kW AC charger provides speedy recharging in as little as three hours.(2)

Improved thermal management allows for consistently reliable performance, keeping the battery temperature stable to maintain optimum efficiency when charging and driving.

An improved front electric motor now develops a powerful 150kW, which on AWD grades provides a potent combined system output of 227kW which helps the RAV4 reach 100km/h from standstill in just 5.8 seconds.

A more affordable 2WD PHEV system will also be offered on RAV4, achieving a total system output of 201kW.

Along with smooth, frugal and responsive power delivery, the PHEV system offers enhanced driving dynamics thanks to its lower centre of gravity and improved body rigidity from the battery’s placement under the vehicle floor.

An optimised system layout relocates more components into the engine bay to liberate more space in the cabin.

Along with PHEV options, the RAV4 will be available with Toyota’s popular and efficient series-parallel hybrid system in AWD and 2WD configurations, both of which produce 143kW combined with excellent fuel economy.

The hybrid systems use Toyota latest technology with enhanced efficiency for the transaxle, PCU, battery and electric motors.

The flagship of the sixth-generation RAV4 range will be the newly introduced GR Sport variant available exclusively in PHEV AWD guise, bringing motorsport-inspired driving character and unique visual flair which sets it apart from the rest of the line-up.

GR Sport stands out with lightweight 20-inch twin-spoke black alloy wheels, aerodynamically enhanced front and rear spoilers and a distinctive grille design with GR mesh pattern which creates a deeper 3D effect.

More than just visual upgrades, the GR Sport also features a 20mm-wider wheel track and upgraded high-performance damper design, stiffer rear suspension brace and retuned suspension and power steering calibration to deliver increased driving thrills.

Inside, the GR Sport adopts discreet GR logos and red accents, sports seats, combination synthetic leather and suede upholstery, console knee pads and aluminium pedals.

The new RAV4 debut’s Toyota’s latest multimedia system powered by Arene, a faster and more compact system creating a seamless digital in-car experience.

Arene is designed to enable the safe, secure and scalable development of automotive software, improving multimedia functionality and driver assistance systems through the use of AI modelling and improved data utilisation, continually enhanced through over-the-air updates.

Improved screen clarity, a new, configurable home screen layout and precise voice control combine with features like Google Points of Interest and real-time navigation details to make the in-car digital environment more usable and easy than ever before.

Technological improvements are also reflected in the upgrades to the RAV4’s Toyota Safety Sense active technology suite, with new and improved features designed to increase safety outcomes for drivers and other road users.

Globally, the all-new RAV4 gains safety features such as front cross-traffic alert which is designed to minimise the risk of a collision with crossing traffic at intersections, while the blind spot monitor now includes the rear vehicle approach indicator feature which can alert drivers of rapidly approaching vehicles from behind, allowing them to react accordingly.

Lane change assist functionality has been expanded to including turn signal-linked autonomous lane change function on highways when adaptive cruise control and lane tracing assist are activated.

Pre Collision System functionality is expanded with improved recognition of obstacles, bicycles and motorbikes, while the advanced parking feature allows owners to control parking from outside the vehicle with the use of a smartphone.

Manual parking is also made easier with the inclusion of a three-dimensional panoramic view monitor which offers a more complete view of the area surrounding the vehicle.

More information on the all-new RAV4 including confirming local specification and grade line-up will be made available closer to its arrival in the first half of 2026.
